“Something like you’ve never seen before… this show is a daringly unique experience, and one that surpasses any expectation you could have… A total sensory experience…The Swell Mob is a perfectly bizarre, uncomfortable, unmissable show”
MUMBLE THEATRE ★★★★★
“I was left with a sense of bewilderment the same as a mortal who’d spent an evening with the fairies might feel. For the show had been truly magical. A dark, sinister magic but one that was certainly spellbinding… come and join the Swell Mob for this really is immersive theatre at its best.”
THE SKINNY ★★★★★
“Seeing it once was wonderful, repeating the experience would be even better.”
UK THEATRE NETWORK ★★★★★
“Get yourself a drink and mingle - Gamble, steal, watch the boxing, be taken to a room and meet the inmates of the asylum. Give yourself up to this world and have a ball! Loved it.

WEEKEND NOTES ★★★★1/2
“Riveting, electrifying, and unknowingly attractive… their deceitful and deceptive actions that will charm you and make you swoon with tingling curiosity. Treat this dystopian world like a gift that needs to be unwrapped to its core to reveal an era that will change your life in a span of just 75 minutes (by the end of which, you'll wish it didn't end!).”
THREEWEEKS ★★★★☆
“It's rare to find shows that really commit to blurring the lines between audience and performer…you will find that everybody has a story to tell, even if those stories do come at a price.”
THE SCOTSMAN ★★★★☆
“So intriguing and intoxicating is The Swell Mob’s brew that audience members are easily hooked into the hurly burly and the mood in the room escalates in pitch and intensity until the entire cast are whipped up into an amorphous maelstrom of movement before being sucked through one of the portals to who knows what realm from which they were spewed.”
VOICE MAGAZINE ★★★★☆
“Excellent movement pieces, eerie puppetry… intricate character traits and entwining story arcs… fantastic”
THE WEE REVIEW ★★★★☆
“This production is overflowing with energy, attention to detail, back stories and mysterious, possibly malevolent romance. If the idea of losing yourself in times gone by and unravelling a bit of a mystery while you’re at it appeals, go see, guvnor. As you won’t find much else like it.”
LIMELIGHT MAGAZINE ★★★★☆
[A] 19th century world of pickpockets, spivs, soldiers, wenches, singers and puppeteers…I kissed a pickpocket’s hand, played five finger fillet, sang bawdy songs, witnessed a fist fight and danced with a buxom wench.
GLAMADELAIDE ★★★★☆
“formidable physical theatre skills allied with cleverly underplayed acting expertise….It was innately disturbing”
THE CULTURE WHISPER ★★★★☆
“Haunting, stylised scenes powerfully interrupt the jovial cacophony of the taproom. ..The Swell Mob will transport you to a warped Dickensian world for an hour and a half. Go for bold immersive theatre”

“The Swell Mob is a great piece of interactive, immersive theatre. There’s nothing else like it right now.”

About
The Swell Mob is a truly immersive experience, the audience are enticed into a deliciously decadent if somewhat run down tap-room seemingly suspended circa 1830. Given currency to spend within on anything that takes their fancy they are enticed into gambling on the Faro table, purchasing experiences such as tarot, portraiture, glimpses of the Fiji Mermaid or a spot at the bare-knuckle boxing exhibition. Piano and fiddle play through the night with intermittent cabaret, freakshow, puppetry and operatic singing performances peppered throughout on a cabaret stage. Macabre puppetry and physical theatre add an additional layer to this wonderfully complex and intricate production.
Whilst on the surface this seems to be the faithful recreation of a thriving late-night public house, complete with drinks served throughout in tankards at the bar, our esteemed guests soon discover that something more sinister lurks just below the surface.
It appears that the incumbent inhabitants are haunted by an unspoken horror, their desperation to acquire the currency and the unsettling manner in which they scuttle off to pay it into the house encourages our new arrivals to delve deeper into the macabre world that they now find themselves populating.
Our audience can choose to assist individuals in their various intertwined stories enabling them to take that next step towards the release and oblivion or to warn the master of their activities and be instrumental in their perpetual torture.
Time is running out and the pressure is mounting, whom will you choose to help? who deserves freedom and who should be damned to ride the merry go round again?
