Matej Matejka
Is a multi-award winning Slovak theatre researcher, actor, director, and movement teacher, living in Poland. He has performed with Teatr ZAR in productions such as ‘Anhelli: The Calling’ and ‘Caesarean Section: Essays on Suicide’, the latter of which received the Herald Angel and Total Theatre awards in Edinburgh in 2012. In 2010, Matej founded and became the leader of Studio Matejka, a company affiliated with the Grotowski Institute.
He has directed performances such as ‘Echoes of the Walls Underground Are Louder than the Footsteps Above Me’ (co-directed with Yuri Kordonski), ‘The Woman Decomposed’, ‘Charmolypi’, and ‘Awkward Happiness or Everything I Don’t Remember About Meeting You’ (which received a special mention at the BE Festival in Birmingham in 2014).
Matej is deeply interested in the physical expression of actors and dancers, and has led workshops at theaters and universities all around the world. He created various interactive performances among few to mention ‘Angry Man: Variations in Defense of Anger’ at the Grotowski Institute in Wrocław, Poland (2018), which has been nominated for The Best OFF 2018/2019 in Poland.
Matej directed eight short films, including ‘Pearadise’, which won the Best Foreign Film award at the Los Angeles International. Recently he was a movement director for Flabbergast’s Macbeth and the director of Saksi Bisou’s ‘Promised Land’ in London, Uk.
