BUFFON CLOWNING MASTERCLASS - SIMON GLEAVE
London
21st - 23rd May - 11am - 5pm
"…out of the night…”
A 3-day workshop in the Bouffon of Mystery
led by Simon Gleave
There are those who believe in everything and laugh at nothing. And there are those who believe in nothing and laugh at everything. These are the Bouffons: masters of the dark art of mockery.
What does it mean to imitate, ridicule, mock and deny something? What is that dark part of our imagination that longs to deny the very things we most believe in? What joy can we discover in the grotesque play of our own bodies, voices, attitudes and stories?
Through playing, dancing and transforming through masks, costumes and all sorts of material, we will dive into the unknown and unknowable aspects of our beliefs in character, self and the world.
These ancient outcasts of human drama, the mysterious bouffons that emerge out of the night to prophecy some deep and disturbing truth about us, is the subject of this 3 day workshop with award winning director Simon Gleave.
On Simon’s directing work for bouffon piece, Unforgettable Girl:
“A standout show that keeps the audience at the midpoint of laughter, discomfort and horror…” -The Stage
“Leaves an indelible mark on its audience, offering a theatrical experience that will be talked about long after the curtains close. A must-watch for those seeking a show that’s as engaging as it is innovative.” -Theatre Weekly
“One of the most original, risk-taking shows on the Fringe. This is a statement and a provocation as much as it is a show. Truly unforgettable.” -The Reviews Hub
“Wonderful, exhilirating…” -The Scotsman
